Here's a map I made with physics to complement it. It can be played as a survival type game where you kill super Pfhor or an every man for himself by turning off aliens.

To make really cool maps you really need Forge AND Obed.
I wonder if the creator of Marathon RED used Obed once in awhile, because Obed would have made his maps so much easier to make, I'm talking about the maps that have a large number of overlapping polygons.

My Thoughts on your map. (In a Constructive Critisizm Way)
The Sides or the water pools that are invisible are a nice touch, and a nasty surprise if anyone throws a gernade at them too close.

They might cause *smearing* (see next line) on the Mac Version, however they didn't make any problem in Aleph One for me.
The Skybox was missing for me causing *smearing*. (Previsiously written as tearing)
Behind the plateform near the waterfall is untextured.
You might want to put the plateform in the initially down position (Not down to come back up) So that people can get on it imidiately after falling in the area there. This helps speed up gameplay.
Waterfall is nice :)
Its a good start, especially with OBED. I tend to have problems with that map editor myself, since I don't understand it very well.

You dont have to pay for forge right? or so i believe. so why do you have to pay for obed?
Zott
Jul 21 2006, 03:02 AM
Because when you bought Marathon Infinity Forge came with that, so in a sense you were paying for forge indirectly.
Also because Bungie did not make OBED, and the author can do whatever he wants. Hes not charging for maps, or mods, but the tools to create them. That's how he gets around the Bungie EULA.

What the hell are you talking about? Think about it. Obed came out in a time less devoted to open-source projects, unlike Pfhorge, which is open-source. It's also in a niche market, making content for a game that, at the time, was far from popular on the platform (Windows). The author was either a college student or a graduate who needed money. Everyone has a right to demand payment for something he has made. I hope you follow through with your life philosophy and don't become a "greedy scum bag." You should volunteer your life away, never charging money for your goods or services. While you're at it, move into a forest and hunt your goddamn food. Give it away to other people, and even animals. You wouldn't want to be greedy.

Actually, I would be glad to pay for Pfhorge. Even If it wasen't enough to help the developer in any real way It would give him a reason to work on it.

QUOTE(xyfbzi @ Jul 21 2006, 03:25 AM)

what's "tearing?"
Sigh* I actually meant smearing. What happens is when you leave a wall untextured the game has nothing to fill in its place. Whatever you were last looking at get smeared into that untextured wall space. Can be pretty ugly unless your looking for the effect. Matrix maybe?

For a real life exmaple on the Windows platform. When you have a top window that you can drag around and leave its outlines because the background windows are not refreshing. That is smearing. In the Solitare game, when you win, it does this effect if i'm not mistaken, thought it might only apply to the old 3.1 version. LOL

New computers make it go too fast.
Also happens with the sides of liquids since they are untextured, you have to go about texturing those yourself.
What tearing actually refers more too is the effect of frame rate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TearingWhich I guess COULD apply, but isn't exactly what I wanted to describe.
Feel free to add smearing to wikipedia if you want, so far they only have something for rock climbing. Needs more Marathon.

look, charging for programs is fine. but in a community like this, its wrong. Its just a copy of another program.
well actually now that i try to think of an example, it would be the logical thing. but i still just think it isn't right. maybe "greedy scum bag" and "i want to beat him up" were a little harsh. i apologize.
yes, i am actually a strong supporter of communism, where nobody buys anything, although nobody has done it right so far. and i also would be fine living in a forest hunting stuff and foraging and what have you. but then i wouldn't get to play marathon.

Jul 22 2006, 10:52 PM
Obed is very different from Forge, and it wasn't made when "a community like this" existed.
Bobwithkeycard
Jul 23 2006, 01:13 AM
I'm wondering: perhaps the author might feel different about it nowadays and might consider releasing the source if he'd knew about the community.
irons, do you remember that letter you wrote aksing the Anvil guy about giving out the source? Perhaps a little modified version of it might do wonders here

Hmm, does that mean that he is still thinking about it, or is it just a nice way of sayint that an answer is yet to come?
Sadly Obed gets a lot of bad credit, because ppl cannot accept that it doesnt have the marathon 3D engine in it for the texturing. Even though it has a lot of advenaced feautures no one else offers, like on-the-fly level scaling, rotating even bending the whole level's architecture or automatically creating complex staircases, ellipses and other cool stuff in a stable environment.
Nice going, though...the Hanson letter you posted up here sounded like the best one for the job.

Hey maybe instead of getting him to release his program source code we can convince him to add that 3D texturing.

I think more people would like it after that. I bet he could use the Marathon source code in helping him.

I've been using OBED for quite awhile now (I'm on windows :(), but i have a quick question...
How do I make a polygon (or room) so that a player cannot pass through it (like an invisible wall sort-thing)?
EDIT: I tried to edit the polygon's properties to "Impassable," but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?
Bobwithkeycard
Jul 24 2006, 11:52 PM
I'm afraid that isn't possible, stung_man. In Pfhorte2 you would select the polygon's side you want to make impassable and select the checkbox solid.
If you have a semi modern computer ( like 1-2ghz ) then you could go ahead and emulate a mac with basilisk.
Check this
link for an easy way to do this.
Btw, the impassable you selected in obed actually means that an item isn't able to spawn there.

the warning you described shows up when the cd-rom driver is missing in the drivers folder in system32 ( like in the path the warning message shows you ). You can get this file inside the basilisk directory in the folder 'cd-rom drivers' and havta put it in yourself.
This is only required to access the cd-rom drive from within the emulated mac environment. I'm also getting this warning message, but it doesnt prevent basilisk from starting. My guess is that the paths in the prefs are messed up beause you are using it in a different location than the guy who put it together.
Havta start the basiliskGUI and check what's up with the Rom image ( 'memory' tab ) and the HDD images ( 'disk' tab ).

thanks, i hope i can understand what you said, cuz i wanna make maps so bad
now it says the system32 file should only be in the cdenable spot, i put it back and it says its missing!!! GAH im confused!! why cant there just be a program where you dont have to move files around, where you just double click then it goes?!

Like I already wrote: you have to start the basiliskGUI ( GUI - Graphical User Interface ) and have to assign the rom path manually in the 'memory' tab as well as the path to the hard disk image 'MacHD.dsk' in the 'disk' tab. The reason behind this is that the author used this package in a different location from where you are using it. I can't spell it out for you any further
Masked boy
Jul 25 2006, 11:01 PM
well, i already did that bobwithkeycard, but thanks
Bobwithkeycard
Jul 26 2006, 01:01 AM
and you are still getting the "Cannot open ROM file" error? Can't quite imagine that. All i can say is that i even dled it myself and it works after having corrected the paths.
also seems that one has to change 'Screen type' in the 'screen' tab of the GUI from DirectX to Windows GDI in order to start the 3 Marathon in the emulated environment, otherwise the marathons complain that there is no monitor present that meets the minimum specifications.
Also keep in mind that Forge only runs in 256 color mode which also has to be set in the 'screen' tab of the GUI.
Masked boy
Jul 26 2006, 01:16 AM
ppphhhhtt......when i did everything you just said, it had something new to say to me when i wanted to open marathon 2. it said
Invalid ROM size. Basilisk II requires a 512k or 1MB MacII ROM
Dammit i wish i had a mac
Bobwithkeycard
Jul 26 2006, 01:36 AM
You wanted to open Marathon 2? That would mean that you already made it to the Mac OS 7.5.5 desktop. Are you saying that upon double clicking marathon 2 a windows alert windows showed up telling you that the ROM is of invalid size? That doesnt sounds very plausible.
The ROM is indeed a 1 Mbyte ROM and the GUI also verifies it upon selecting it. Can only tell you that it's possible to run this package.
If you want more advice then upload some screenshots of the GUI and the error message, plz.

K i'll just suggest this....the Batillisk 2 included in that software package is not the most recent version. It does not include a Just In Time emulaton method.
Go here:
http://www.gibix.net/dokuwiki/en:projects:basilisk2Get the newest version, throw it in your existing package.
Downlad this
http://www.libsdl.org/download-1.2.php and put it in the Battilisk 2 folder if you havn't already.
Install the newest of this.
http://gladewin32.sourceforge.net/modules/...wcat.php?cid=12Then click Batilisk II GUI, find the rom path under the rom and select it.
Since that 90 meg download came with a disk image, select that as a disk source.
Click start and see if it works.
Once you reach the desktop, Double click Hard Drive, and Look for the Marathon Folder.
Heres an image for yous.
(Ignore Sheepshaver, it is simply a PowerPC version of Batillisk II)
third picutre is A-10 Attack. OS is 8.6 which is why it looks different than 7.5.5
