Marathon: Legends of Carnage

***IMPORTANT - READ THIS WHOLE MESSAGE BEFORE SUBMITTING ANYTHING TO ME***

I have randomly decided to start a project for all you die-hard Marathon fans. I don't know what to call it, but for now it is known as Marathon: Legends of Carnage. Basically, you just make a short story and send it to me at perseusspartacus@gmail.com. DON'T make it a download, please. My browser can't handle downloads. Just include the story in your email like this:

Hi, my username on the Pfhorums is ______ and this is my short story submission for Marathon: Legends of Carnage:

-----------------------------------------------

It was the best of times...

blah blah blah

The End

-----------------------------------------------

Hope you like, blah blah blah.

Once I've received 14 submissions, I'll release the compiled 'book' of short stories to the public, with a more fitting title to the compilation.

RULES OF SUBMISSION:

1 - Do not include profanity or extremely detailed violence (i.e. you can say 'the creature exploded' but you can't give details about what went flying afterwards) in your story. I just don't like it when people use either one in stories.
2 - Include your Pfhorums name in the submission, that way I can give you credit for your story.
3 - The story you submit must be relatively short. In other words, if I were to put it in a book, it should take up maybe five-seven pages (one page meaning one side of a piece of paper).
4 - Include the title of your story in the submission, otherwise I will assign my own title to the story. Not absolutely necessary, but it would be good if you included a title.
5 - Be original. If I feel your story isn't too original, I won't include it. If you parody other stories (like Philip K. Dick's Impostor) but put it into the contexts of the Marathon story, that still counts as original, just so long as you don't copy the original story almost identically.
6 - The story must be directly related to Marathon. If you talk about a guy being followed and carrying a weird pocket knife, that doesn't count as being related to Marathon.

If you're submission doesn't make the cut, don't let it wear you down. I'll probably release multiple editions of this sort of thing. Either way, just keep trying. Eventually you're bound to succeed. Strive hard, reap the rewards.

Cheers,
PerseusSpartacus

Marathon: Ex Pluribus

Hello, everybody.

I have already announced this on the Marathon Story Forum, but I'm not sure it received much attention. Therefore, I shall announce it again.

MARATHON: EX PLURIBUS

Marathon: Ex Pluribus will be a sequel to Marathon Infinity. However, it will reveal that our trek through the timelines was not over when we activated the Jjaro station. The W'rkncacnter got away once more. Eventually you winded up in a timeline just like M2, but where Tycho was not destroyed and the trih xeem was deactivated successfully.

In Ex Pluribus you will face many of our old foes and some new ones. You will attack a Pfhor ship, defend a Human base on Lh'owon, seek out a S'pht temple, and find yourself aboard the infamous Manus Celer Dei. Your weapons will be familiar, yet more powerful than ever. You will slay enemies to the tunes which plagued the U.E.S.C. Marathon. And you will learn the fate of Leela.

Now, as for my progress on the game, I've so far been working on the maps and storyline, and I'll get to the physics, shapes and sounds later in the year. Also, the game will come with the TTEP for Marathon Infinity, so it'll look really cool. I'm using Weland for the maps right now, combined with Visual Mode.lua, so the maps may lack some small features, but the texturing should be really good.

Cheers,
PerseusSpartacus

Hi Pfhorums!

My name is Rich. I first started playing Marathon at the wee age of 7 or 8 with my mother when my parents first bought a Mac OS. My mother bought with the computer "9 Big Ones" which was a CD with 9 different Bungie/Mac games and we later bought the "Mac Action Sack". Since my mother and I started playing Marathon and Pathways Into Darkness, I have felt a major sentimental attachment to Marathon as I'm not a huge die hard gamer. It was a major part of my life growing up when it comes to technology and a very fond memory I have of my mother.

I thought i'd share my story of how I became involved with the Marathon universe. I have always loved the story telling ability of the game and the depth of the experience. I'm a huge huge huge noob when it comes to this forum so insight and recommendations as to how to use this forum would be greatly appreciated. I'm mostly looking for insight as to where I can find more underground story to the universe including epilogue and prologue.

All the best,

See you starside.

- Rich

Anyone actually play Minotaur?

I know that it's kind of a running joke around here, but I was just curious. I figured that no one here would play it unless for nostalgia/amusement, since solo mode is useless from what I remember and multiplayer is AppleTalk only (besides, how many Minotaur fans do you know personally?). Am I wrong? It's quite unfortunate that the game's options are so limited, since it looks like it could be a fun old school dungeon crawler.

This year will be the game's 20th anniversary. Think Bungie will do anything with Minotaur? Feature it as an easter egg in one of their newer games? Give a story about the process of making it? Keep it under the rug?

Terraphoenix

This is an intro to a roleplay I'm thinking about starting on the Runescape forums. I thought I'd post it on here to give you guys something to read. Enjoy.

Air filled Keith’s lungs as he inhaled heavily. He was still buckled into the co-pilot’s seat of the shuttle. Smoke could be smelled from where he was. Turning to his partner, he found him dead. A piece of metal had cut through him.

“Aw, man,” Keith muttered under his breath. He unbuckled himself and made his way over to him to get a better look. “Aw, man! Why did you have to die on me, Scott?”

It was no use staying by Scott’s lifeless body. He had to help whoever else had managed to survive in the crash with him. Scott would have done the same, and told him to do it as well. Pulling himself away, Keith made his way out of the cockpit.

A couple hours ago…

“Look, it’s nothing!” Scott said sarcastily. “And even more nothing! Seriously, what was the point of this again?”

Keith was resting his head and arms on the co-pilot’s controls as Scott kept alert. The opposite had seemed to have occurred for him. Instead of being energetic like Scott, he seemed to be more tired than ever. Maybe it was a sideffect of early usage of statis, or cryosleep for others.

“Hey. HEY! I’m talking to you!”

To get Keith to listen to him, Scott shook Keith’s shoulder with his free hand.

“Alright, alright. I’m awake.” Keith replied, wipping the sleep from out of his eyes. “You were asking why we’re here right?”

“Yeah. How do you know? You looked totally asleep.”

“Because all I could dream about was your head badgering me with all your questions.”

It only took a second before both of them began laughing about the bizzar dream. You could tell that those two were very good friends.

“Wow. I wish my dreams were as funny as yours.” Scott said after getting over his laughing fit.

“You wish.” Keith said back.

It was quiet for a little bit after that. Both were ready at their controls. Ready for what seemed like nothing at the moment, as the screen showed only the black space and debris.

“I hope I can bring back a sovenir.” Scott said finally. “I’m thinking a space rock from the look of things.”

“I will gladly help you get one Scott.” Keith said with a smile on his face. “But first things first.”

“Right.”

Abruptly, a differential-colored spiral appeared several meters in front of them. Scott tried turning the shuttle to the side, but the controls were unresponsive.

“What is that?” Keith said, also trying to get the shuttle to turn with his controls.

“Whatever it is, it’s dragging us into it! The controls aren’t working!”

“Neither are mine!”

Scott reached above and switched the com on to alert everyone. “Attention people! We seem to be being dragged into some kind of hole in space! Since the controls aren’t responding, it’s going to be a bumpy ride, so hang on!”

What used to be several meters was now a couple. The shuttle was beginning to shake violently as it got closer to the hole.

“Keith! Strap yourself in!”

Keith nodded, and took his hands off the controls to buckle himself in.

“You should strap yourself in as well.” Keith said as he took his controls over.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. It’ll be just like the good’ol days, eh Keith?”

As the space hole consumed the space shuttle fully, Keith felt himself passing in and out of consciousness.

“Stay with me Keith! Stay with me!”

Scott’s words were soon drowned out as Keith fully blacked out. He wasn’t ready for this.

Keith made his way down a fleet of stairs to reach the lower deck of the space shuttle. A few sections had fires burning. His best bet was to reach the outside. It was likely that everyone else would be heading there as well.

Making his way through the smoke, fires, and metal debris that had broken off during the crash, Keith heard a call for help somewhere down the hall. He had to help whoever it was.

“Where are you?” Keith yelled out.

“I’m over here! I’m pinned under a pipe!” replied the distressed person.

Keith shielded his eyes and began moving to where the caller was. Making a turn to the left, and entering the rec room, he found who it was that needed help.

“It’s about time!” Kirk said to Keith. “Now, can you get this off me? I can’t do it alone. It’s too heavy for me.”

Keith ran over to him to help him. “Ok, on the count of three, I’m going to lift this, and you’ll move your legs out.”

Kirk breathed in, and then out before agreeing. “Ok. Lets do it.”

With Kirk ready, Keith grabbed ahold of the heavy metal pipe. He may have not remembered when he had last lifted something this heavy, but he was sure he could help Kirk free.

“One.” Keith gripped the pipe tighter, and Kirk prepared himself. “Two. Three!” Keith lifted with all his strength. The pipe was lifted high enough that Kirk was able to move out of the way. When Kirk was out of the way, Keith dropped it back to the floor. He breathed out a sigh of relief that Kirk was freed.

“I think my leg will be fine.” Kirk said while standing up slowly.

“It’ll have to be good enough to walk out of here.” Keith said back to him. “Lets get out of here.”

The both of them left the rec room together. They then found their way out of the space shuttle, when the emergency sprinklers finally activated.

“It’s about time someone got them working.” Kirk said out loud to one one in particular, but Keith wasn’t paying attention even if Kirk was talking to him. He was wondering where they were, and something more important.

“Kirk, you gotta see this.” Keith said with a hint of fear in his voice.

“What is it?” Kirk asked, walking over to where Keith had walked over to.”

“Look.”

Keith pointed to the shuttle, but the front of it wasn’t what Keith was pointing at. He was pointing to the back of the shuttle, which wasn’t even there at all.

“Wheres the other half of the space shuttle?” Keith asked, fear starting to fill him up, and the same was happening to Kirk. It seemed how long it took the sprinklers to turn on didn’t matter anymore…

http://forum.watmm.com/

This is a popular forum chock-full of people who make music. It was created for talking about underground electronic music, like Aphex Twin and Clark and Boards of Canada ($lave likes some of this kind of music; I wouldn't be too surprised if he had an account there). If you ask people to use their music they'd probably be more than happy to let you. The only reason I could see them not letting you is if they're actually signed and don't know if their record label would let them give you the music (there are a number of semi-popular artists there).

Here's a couple examples of music people made:
http://forum.watmm.com/topic/72983-fahzers...earth-previews/
http://forum.watmm.com/topic/72915-rat-fac...nesome-road-ep/
http://forum.watmm.com/topic/72472-new-tracks/

The "Your Latest Creations" and "EKT New Releases" are probably the best sections to check, although two of the above examples are from "New & Upcoming Releases" (which also has releases from artists that don't necessarily post there).

Wolfenstein 3D

I know that most people these days probably see it as just an anachronistic nostalgia game, but I still think that it's worth playing, even almost 20 years later ("Shite!" as Dr. Schabbs would say). Unfortunately, I have neither a pre-Intel Mac nor the discs necessary to set up an OS 9 emulator. As such, I'm currently unable to play the Mac version, which I believe to be the best one. Still, the PC version, which was recently ported to Mac OS X, is good enough for me. I just got finished playing a well-made custom scenario, and I enjoyed it all the way through (save for the moments when I was really frustrated from getting my ass kicked so much by all the damn mutants).

The game can be quite challenging (at least on "I Am Death Incarnate!" difficulty). Obviously the AI isn't very advanced, but the enemies shoot pretty quickly and accurately. It also takes a while to get used to the fact that, owing to the (understandably) very primitive game engine, the enemies can shoot you from highly impractical places (like through the corners of walls). You really have to think on your feet and take cover often if you want to survive.

I suppose I just really appreciate how FPS games like Wolfenstein 3D had a sort of straightforward "arcade" element to them, where it was basically all about how engaging and challenging you could make it for the player, regardless of how campy or impractical it turned out. Not to be a curmudgeon or say that there aren't good video games today (there are), but it's harder to find a modern FPS with that level of purity. Plus, although the engine is very simple (completely flat levels, linear AI, etc), it allows people like the author of the scenario I just played to be creative with limited options. That and the learning curve for learning how to use the level editor isn't very high (I remember having a hell of a fun time with WolfEdit).

Discuss.

All I've really used for activating monsters is activated by nearby enemies. It's worked better than having the player shoot enemies to wake them up. In the last map I made, Polygons, Platforms, and Duct Tape, I tried using a visible monster trigger to activate some enemies on the ledge by having them teleport in. Stepping on the trigger seemed to not only activate those units, but also some others behind some doors. Not sure why it did that.

I was wondering if anybody could specificly tell me how the visible, invisible, and dual monster triggers work. Knowing this infomation would help me make better stuff.
Thanks in advance.

""""Hi.
I'm pissed off with a simple problem.
Do not know anything about programming.
but I am facing a problem that I think should be related.

I bought the Game, Perfect Dark XBLA [XBoxLiveArcade] and their need to extract to HD textures.

The Problem and to extract the file, get another full of zeros.
Extracting it with Le Fluffie exits the game directory and files.
But the textures are in a compressed format beyond recognition software for any computer."""

this question is that all people who tried to extract files from XBLA has.
But for now, no response.

I enrolled in this community, and I made this topic because apparently do not have "nothing" on the Internet about how to extract whole archives of XBLA games.

So maybe here is not the first.

Annex pictures of how the file is. [Must be equal for all XBLA games]

I do not know if you already know but some XBLA games use a more modern textures.
It's called, Procedual Textures
and is quite surprising. Instead of using it to generate textures stored in real time! Incredible but I'm pretty sure this game I'm trying to extract not use it.

So who knows programming and want to contribute to more knowledge on this topic that has just been born, feel comfortable.

It's great to discuss and talk with a community so rich in content.

Anyone who wants to contribute their knowledge and experience would be great.

In short order the topic is: Clarify ways to Extract Files and Textures complete games XboxLiveArcade [But it also can talk about any other system or games]. For example and in particular, Perfect Dark. [XBLA].

Those who know something, please feel free to share.

Hope you enjoy the development of ideas.

And who is there already thinking of talking fudge, I say that this topic despite being on a game for XBLA, has everything to do with this forum it is on your schedule. Not about piracy or mods.
But also have nothing against piracy or mods.

And in time, sorry for compliance wrong English, is that I'm from Brazil, and have not had time to learn English.

Hug.

1M1

Hello all!

I recently was in a thread on bungie.net when the validity of a touchpad as a drawing implement came up.

After I finished, I remembered the good denizens here and decided to post the results. Enjoy.

QUOTE

Posted by: homocidalham

QUOTE

Posted by: spartain ken 15
Congrats everyone. :p

I wish I only had one of those art drawing tablets.

Pro Tip: A touchpad is NOT a good tool for paint.

ORLY?

The video was compressed, so here is the finished picture. I didn't spend much time on it, so it doesn't look all that good, but it shows that a touch pad can be used to render images (that aren't stick figures).

Seriously, I've drawn pictures with ketchup, pepper, and napkins in a restaurant while waiting for my food.
